It seems that we owe the Christian
tradition of the Nativity Scene to Saint
Francis of Assisi, although it was not
until the fifteenth century that this tradition
spread and became popular. The figures
in the Nativity Scene are, like those here,
imple and without excessive decoration even
though they are full of symbolic meaning.
